Blog assignment 5
By Carlos Fonte
1. Compared to writing traditional essays as you have in other classes, were the expectations of the blog assignment easier, harder or just different? In other words, was it clear to you what the format of a blog was and how to produce one?
Well at first I was very confused at what a blog was or even were to begin. I mean my children do all that stuff but as a 46 year old man I was never exposed to any of this. But as I started on the adventure of writing one and I wrote my first blog it got easier. It was a lot harder to me than a traditional essay. I am not used to putting my thoughts in words I am old school. And yes as the semester progressed it was easier to sit down and write. And by doing so it made it easier to write in my English class. I have not been to school since the early eighties when I was in high school so all this writing and thinking that you made us do was very beneficial
2. Did the blog assignments, and the requirement to create a blog, relate to the class topics and course objectives? Why or why not?
I thought that the blog list that you gave us did relate to the class. And the topics that I choose to write about had a lot to do with humanities and popular culture. And I learned things that I never had really thought about. So yes I was very happy with the outcome of the topics that you picked. I enjoyed doing the research about the automobile blog. I had never really thought about how the automobile had affected America at the time of its inception. I also enjoyed writing about the freedom of speech and propaganda. These topics that you let us pick from were so cool because I actually learned something from them. Some of my other classes are not so educational. And the propaganda assignment opens your eyes to the different types of propaganda that is out there that the media and advertisers can use to try and sell you products or try to influence you politically.
3. Did the non-text elements of the blog program contribute to your learning in this class? Did they get in the way? Or did they have no affect at all?
I thought that using the animoto soft ware was pretty cool, and I enjoyed making my short video about America. I wish that I could have had more time to do more with the program than the 30 second video that I was able to do. I really enjoyed watching all the videos that all the other students put together. I think the rest of the class did a great job with all their presentations. And yes it did have an effect on me it helped me to be more creative. I had never been involved with anything like this before. I think that you should use more of these types of assignments in the future with all of your classes. If I had more classes that were fun and let you use your mind to come up with video presentations I think more students would be inclined to take more college classes with this type of curriculum. And all the younger students seem to do well with this type of assignment because they are more exposed to face book and YouTube and these kinds of web sites were you write and create videos to talk or show your friends.

I choose to write about propaganda and give modern examples of both legitimate political free speech and of propaganda.
First of all let’s define Propaganda: according to the Webster’s New World Collage Dictionary propaganda is defined as any systematic, widespread dissemination or promotion of a particular ideas, doctrines, practices, etc, to further one’s own cause or to damage an opposing one.
First I would like to talk about different techniques of propaganda. One technique is called assertion is often used by advertising executives all over the world. http://mason.gmu.edu/~amcdonal/Propaganda%20Techniques.html An assertion is statement presented with a lot of enthusiasm and energy that is not necessarily true. Another type of propaganda is the bandwagon technique. The bandwagon technique has been used since the beginning of time.
It has been used in both wartime and peace time. And also is used in modern advertising. The bandwagon technique works on the premise of following the crowd hey if he is joining in so will I. basically how it works is that you try to convince the person that one side is the right side because more people are joining that political party.
Another type of propaganda is card stacking it goes like this, you present information that shows your organization or entity or idea in a positive light while omitting info that could possibly cast a doubt or contradiction to your organization. Then there is the lesser of two evils involves convincing an individual or a group of an idea or proposal by making it seem as the least offensive of the two options.
Now the marching of Dr. Martin Luther king in Montgomery Alabama boycotting the bus transit system is a good example of free speech. http://www.africanaonline.com/montgomery.htm
In 1955 about 40,000 the black folks in Montgomery Alabama decided to start boycotting of the public transportation dept or the bus system in Montgomery. It all started by the women’s political council as a response to the arrest & pending trial of Rosa Parks. Rosa was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a peckerwood on a segregated bus in Montgomery. By the next morning after the incident Joann Robinson of the women’s council had printed up 52,000 flyers telling the black folks of Montgomery to stay off any public transportation or the bus system.
Dr. Martin Luther King & a white minister named Robert Graetz decided to start planning a massive rally in Montgomery the night of Rosa Parks’s trial. Also the local chapter of the NAACP got in on the act they were looking for a chance to take on the government of Montgomery and put them on trial for violating their civil rights.
The African American population of Montgomery had been subjected to the violation of their civil rights for decades and finally the bow broke that day with Rosa Parks’s refusal to pay her fare at the front of the bus and then have to give up her seat to some peckerwood because his skin was lighter than hers.
Rosa lost her case and was convicted of violating segregated seating laws. Dr King and his colleagues decided to continue the boycott; they organized carpools to help the residents of Montgomery get to and from their jobs. After much civil unrest in Montgomery finally in June 1956 the federal court ruled that segregated seating was unconstitutional the U.S. Supreme court up held the decision and finally public transportation was no longer segregated.
Now what the neo-Nazi party of this country does is propaganda. http://www.americannaziparty.com/about/index.php They are trying to disguise their hatred for the Jewish communities and other minority cultures in the United States and abroad. I looked on their website and all though they are proud of what their late leader George Lincoln Rockwell did for the party according to their web site their trying to change their image they talk about the fact that their actions in the past their hatred toward the Jews and African Americans served their purpose at the time. But that their behavior and past activities have given their cause little progress. And not much had been achieved. So they have taken on a new direction. According to their web site they will no longer ware uniforms wow the Gestapo never wore uniforms either but that could not disguise the evil that they represented.
But let’s keep moving also there are no more ranks in the party. They talk about that will not engage in publicly are exposing their cronies to public marches or rallies. So what they are stressing now is small one on one activism.
They talk about that they want Men & women that are willing to sacrifice for the good of the folk and not people who will cause mayhem or who are looking for aggrandizement. They talk about the struggle for their white nation. To end this blog I made two examples one of legitimate
Political speech and one of propaganda I hope I answered the questions posed to me correctly.

I choose to write about love marks like Kevin Roberts terms it as to identify brands which people are loyal even when devotion is not logical. I myself see that on a day to day basis. We are subjected to commercials were to eat, what to eat and were to eat it. Like the McDonald’s commercials come try the Big Mac with two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, Pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. http://www.mcdonalds.com. I don’t know why as a kid I went to McDonald’s it was what I was exposed to as a child. The McDonald’s commercials had all these characters like the hamburgler and all these little French fries running around it attracted me as a child. But was McDonald’s the best hamburger joint in New York City no! But it was the way they portrayed it on television. The whole idea was to attract the children to get the parents to spend money. I today from what I was exposed to as a child take my grandson and my last born to McDonald’s. Is this a love mark? I would say yes, I know that there are so many other places that I could take my grandson & son. But I still gravitate to McDonald’s why? I think we do things like this because we are products of our parents and what they exposed us too as children.
Another thing I think is that we are loyal to the brands we are exposed to in the regions that we live in. I remember when I lived in southern California I was exposed to drinking Budweiser http://www.Budweiser.combeer. I mean that was what all my buddies drank and that was all there was to it. When I joined The United States Army in 1987 I was sent to a base called Fort Leonard wood in Missouri. When I arrived and checked in and received my sleeping quarters I went down to the Davis club to put away a couple of rounds and asked the bar tender for a Budweiser he said we don’t have Budweiser we only serve Busch beer http://www.buschbeer.com I was shocked . I had never even heard of bush beer. See back in the south Busch is the Budweiser of the south. And all the soldiers that I knew drank it because their parents drank it. So I think that we are going to be loyal for the most part to brands that we are exposed through are parents.
